Of all the fiction writing blogs in all the world, why should you walk into this one?

First, why not? Browse. Explore. There is a wealth of writing information, writing tools, writing inspiration online and in books. Sample it all. Use what works for you and toss the rest until another project demands those very tools. Talk to other writers. Share the pain and the joy. You really don’t have to do it alone.

Second, I’ve done a lot of reading and thinking about writing fiction in the past thirty years. I teach writing and I love helping other writers shape their material into novels or short stories that express completely their own visions. I am a synthesizer: I read a lot of novels as well as how-to books and I try to pull ideas from all of them in my own teaching and mentoring.

Third, because after all these years, I’m still having fun with it. I still get a thrill when a student of mine “gets it.” And, yes, before you ask, “getting it” doesn’t mean getting my vision of what her book ought to be. It means getting a better way to bring her vision to life for her reader.

So come on board. Agree with me or disagree. As a recovering lawyer, I love a good argument.
